Aggressive flying wyverns hailed as the 'Crimson Kings of the Skies'. All Rathalos, despite their characteristic color have striking black markings all over the bodies and along their carapaces. This black is stunningly iridescent, supporting the hypothesis that wyverns are able to percieve the ultraviolet spectrum. 

Unlike their counterpart, the Rathian, the Rathalos prefers aerial tactics when hunting. In contrast to his counterpart, he has thick, wickedly curved features, a well defined thagomizer, which unlike the Rathian's tail, is not tipped with toxic spikes, but that by no means makes it less deadly. The honor of toxin delivery instead goes to the talons of the Rathalos, which he uses when striking prey; if the prey animal doesn't die due to shock or blood loss, the poison will do it in.

Like the Rathian, Rathalos has two known subspecies: a brilliant aquamarine to azure variant, a typical partner of the pink Rathian subspecies, aptly named the Azure Rathalos, and the counterpart to the Gold Rathian, the Silver Rathalos.

It's not uncommon to find Rathalos and Rathian subspecies mating, however, Azure and Crimson Rathalos have a strong tendency to fight, despite the fact that neither are overly territorial to their respective color.
